Tony never stayed at Limerston Street but he did help my parents move into their new home. Not only did he provide the garden with one of its first plants, but he helped my mother paint the kitchen. And it’s at about that time that their affair resumed.

I’ve struggled to reconstruct the timeline of the summer of 1960 – with only diary entries and my mother’s memory to rely on. She can’t remember the specific order of events and Tony himself is unmentioned, deliberately, in her appointment diaries. This might not matter, but I am keen to know whether the relationship between my mother and Tony restarted before or after Tony and my father went on a walking holiday together.

My mother, after looking at her diaries, thinks the relationship resumed when my father went to Scotland in early July, with my brother, to visit his aunts. According to those diaries, my mother was painting the house at that time (there is a mention of Sasha coming over to help her paint). And she remembers, clearly, Tony and her together, painting in the kitchen, and that their second affair began then and there.

But, and this is why the timeline is of interest to me, just ten days after my father returns from Edinburgh, he goes on a walking holiday in Wales with Tony. My mother does not remember this sequence of events – which seems unlikely if her lover and her husband were having a holiday together. My father later recalled this holiday with a mixture of pain and pleasure, in the form of blisters and beer, and he spoke fondly of Tony’s companionship and inexhaustibility.

Maybe my interest in this level of detail is a little unhealthy. But I would like to know if my father went on holiday with his closest friend, knowing that his friend and his wife were having an affair.
